Registered golfers in Australia will have received notification from Golf Australia of a change to their Players Personal Liability Insurance Policy which is a part of their membership with an affiliated golf club.
This policy of insurance has been maintained by Golf Australia as from 2009. Since that time, the insurer has paid out $3.4 million in claims on behalf of members. The policy protects members from liability in the event that they are responsible for causing personal injury to another golfer or another person for causing any property damage.
Under the current policy of insurance, up to $20 million of personal liability cover is provided to indemnify the golfer from a claim for damage to property or personal injury that occurs whilst the golfer is playing or practising golf. As from 1 March 2025, changes will be made to the policy of insurance.
These changes will be:
Any claim, loss, damage, liability or costs and expenses incurred directly or indirectly in connection with third party property to a golf cart or personal electric device (phone etc) will be excluded.
There will be a $1,000 excess payable by the golfer in the event there is a claim for property damage resulting from the negligent conduct of the golfer.
Golfers should also be aware that the provisions of their Public Liability Insurance usually attached to a Home Contents Policy may cover the golfer for any negligent conduct which occurs off their premises. Accordingly, it may be the case and although the negligent golfer is not covered by the policy of insurance provided by Golf Australia, they may have coverage under their own policy of insurance.
